| Saalbach has been our base for this tour for 26 years and thousands of holidaymakers have been enchanted by the traditional Tyrolean houses and host of excursion opportunities. It’s a pretty village situated in the Pinzgau Valley and is the perfect base from which to explore some of the most scenic and mountainous parts of Austria. English is widely spoken and Saalbach, a fashionable ski resort in winter, has a relaxed atmosphere during the summer. The bustling streets are alive with colourful shops, terraced cafes and numerous small bars, often ringing to the sound of traditional Tyrolean dancing and music.

• GROSSGLOCKNER No tour to Saalbach would be complete without a visit to Grossglockner. Today we journey to Austria’s highest mountain (13,000 ft) via Edelweisspitze to enjoy the breathtaking views of 37 peaks all over 10,000 ft, and 19 glittering glaciers.
• ZELL AM SEE & KITZBUHEL We drive to Zell am See where there will be time for sightseeing in one of Austria’s best-loved resorts on the shore of Lake Zell. Stroll around the historic centre dominated by the church spire and town tower or walk through the lovely lakeside flower gardens. We continue to Kitzbuhel, one of Austria’s most popular winter resorts, which still retains the atmosphere of a Tyrolean village in its historic centre, where old-style houses with projecting gables and painted exteriors vie for attention with products bearing Europe’s most exclusive brand names.
• BERCHTESGADEN The popular resort of Berchtesgaden is the starting point for exploring some of Germany’s most delectable Alpine scenery. Here are superb mountains like the Watzmann and perfect lakes of which the most romantic is Konigssee. Visitors can descend into the depths of the old salt mines and take a boat across an underground lake. Many day trippers will catch a local bus up the mountain road and then ascend by lift, through the rock, to the tip of the Kehlstein to the site of Adolf Hitler’s infamous Eagle’s Nest.
